Trump’s latest ultimatum to enforce an further complete levy on Chinese goods has been labeled a “typical example” of US double standards, as stated by the Chinese government.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson also stated that the nation could introduce its own undisclosed “responsive actions” if the White House occupant follows through on his threat, noting that the country was “fearless” of a potential commercial battle.

This past Friday, the former president responded at China’s decision to reinforce its regulations for exports of rare earths, accusing the Chinese leadership of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the international market “captive”.

He also warned to withdraw from a planned summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, which was arranged for a summit in the Republic of Korea before the month ends.

His statements on that day unsettled global markets, with the S&P 500 share index closing down 2.7%, marking its steepest fall since last spring.

The president’s words renewed concerns of a commercial dispute between the United States and China.

In May, the both nations had consented to eliminate significant levies on each other’s goods, which had raised the prospect of trade halting between the economic powers.

This left, US tariffs on Chinese imports subject to an extra thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while items from the United States entering the Chinese market incur a import levy.

The most recent comments from China – published by the Commerce Ministry in the manner of official answers to media inquiries – echoed language from the height of the recent trade conflict.

They criticised US export restrictions on semiconductors and chips while defending Beijing’s overseas sale regulations on rare earths as “routine measures” to ensure state interests and that of every country.

The official said that for “a long time”, the US had “overstretched the concept of state security, abused overseas sale restrictions and “implemented” discriminatory practices against the Chinese nation.

“Using” tariff threats is not the proper method to deal with China,” the spokesperson commented.

“China’s position on a import duty dispute has consistently been steady: we wish to avoid one, but we are unafraid of one.”

Recently, Beijing announced it was reinforcing export controls on rare earth minerals and further resources critical for cutting-edge industry.

This was seen as a key move, as the country refines about the vast majority of the planet’s critical minerals, which are utilized in goods such as renewable energy components and handheld devices.

New remarks from the US and China are being viewed by analysts as a method of strengthening positions in preparation for forthcoming discussions.

Remains uncertain whether a talks between Donald Trump and China’s leader, expected at a summit in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks, will still proceed.
